provides leadership training and experience for young people
ages 16-24. ACT (Arts for Transformation and Change) Youth
Institute is an arts driven program empowering youth to creatively
respond to the social justice and mental health crisis being faced in
the US. ACT engages youth through activities and exercises focused
on connecting youth to an increased understanding of
themselves and their world. Within the program, participants will
explore trauma informed social emotional learning (personal
care) and draw connections to how individuals activate
regarding themselves and their world (community care).

Launching This Spring: CSC Community Leadership Cohort

Introducing the new CSC Community Leadership Cohort! Friday, April 30, the Spring 2021 Facilitator Workshop will launch a 6 month cohort rooted in collective care for racial equity and mental wellness. After the initial 20 hour workshop diving deep into the CSC 3 facilitation model integrating arts engagement, restorative practices, and social justice, participants will continue to connect and collaborate each week through a series of opportunities with the CSC Team and some extraordinary community partners.

In addition to weekly sessions, Cohort participants will have monthly meetings with a CSC facilitator to support their racial equity and mental health journey through accountability, mentorship, coaching, empathy, and other needs that may arise in the process. The 2021 Community Leadership Cohort (CLC) will culminate with a celebration in early November. Connections will continue to be nurtured through ongoing CSC programs including monthly Alumni gatherings.

The inaugural CLC will be a hybrid of virtual and in person engagements. The first 20 hours of workshop time in April & May will be via zoom. Weekly offerings will be a combination of in person and virtual formats beginning in June.

Our goals for this project include:

  • Increasing individual and collective leadership capacity to promote racial equity,
  • Reducing mental health stigma for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color through arts engagement and restorative practices
  • Increasing access to culturally responsive and relevant mental health resources, spaces, programs and events, especially for BIPOC
  • Build diverse, healthy relationships and networks activated for racial equity.

This program launches April 30th beginning with the Facilitator Workshop.

CSC is hiring an Executive Director

Creative Strategies for Change (CSC) is a nonprofit organization founded in 2013, in Denver, Colorado, with a mission to mobilize arts and education for social justice. CSC is rooted in a racial equity imperative – maintaining majority Black, Indigenous, and People of Color through every aspect of the organization. Our offerings include: community and youth programs, interactive performances and workshops, consulting, leadership, and professional development. 

The Executive Director (ED) is a member of the team that stewards CSC mission, vision, and values. Our collaborative leadership structure allows each team member to be accountable to one another, not solely the ED as in traditional nonprofit models. As a constituent led organization it is essential that our ED has shared lived experience, represents and reflects our community and especially the most marginalized among us. CSC is seeking a candidate with experience in organizational growth, who knows the value of arts and restorative practice in the work of equity and justice, to guide our devoted, creative, badass visionary team through the journey from start up to sustainable, from surviving to thriving! 

In collaboration with the brilliant staff, board, and community, the ED will galvanize our internal and external commitment to equity, excellence, creativity, and wellness. Current priorities for the position include: 

  • Lead a collaborative process with the staff and board to capture, operationalize, activate, and evaluate our short and long term strategic vision
  • Collaborate with the Director of Development and Capacity Building to bolster administrative systems and build organizational capacity centering wellness and equity
  • Support thriving programs in partnership with Co-Directors of Arts and Education as we grow up and glow up
  • Fortify our Restorative System and Human Resource needs for sustainability and growth as individuals and a collective 
  • Grow the constituent-led board of directors, deepen engagement and accountability, improve information sharing and communications between the board and staff and broader community
  • Work with our accountant to manage the organizational finances, and collaborate with the executive committee and administrative team to develop, review, refine, and implement an annual operating budget in alignment with program budgets and needs
  • Lead from the heart, shine light where it is needed, show up for the unpredictable and messy needs of our beloved grassroots organization as we navigate the nonprofit industrial complex and dismantle white supremacy norms with love and creativity. 

Schedule-wise, you’d be looking at 40 hours a week between 8am – 6pm, M-F. (some evenings and weekends will be required). This position is based in the CSC office space at 2900 N. Downing St. Suite 1B. Typically we have 1-2 flex days / work from home days each month. While covid restrictions are in place, we honor individual needs and have all precautions in place, with most staff continuing to work from the office.

Preferred start date May/June 2021.

The salary range is $70,000-$80,000 annually (depending on experience). CSC currently offers the following benefits to all employees, this is negotiable as an area we want to improve and may be able to provide supplementary pay to cover a transition period of onboarding a new health insurance / benefits package.

  • Health Care Contributions : $400/month (FTE)
  • Accrual of PTO – 2 days per month

As an ideal candidate, you…

  • Know that social justice is a lifestyle commitment and align with the CSC mission, vision, values, and racial equity imperative.
  • Wield the magical skill of aligning organizational scope, with the goals, mission, and vision of a small organization with big ideas.
  • Are not afraid of budgets and operations, and have experience and expertise in the field.
  • Have 3-5 years consecutive experience in an administrative leadership role with nonprofit, arts, or community-based organizations. 
  • Have experience with organizational change and growth, and guiding a committed team through the start up to sustainable experience.
  • Are familiar with some or all of the following: community organizing, performing arts and arts education, youth leadership development, restorative/transformative justice.
  • Know the nimble workings of nonprofit boards, including relationships, development, management, and fundraising. 
  • Recognize that hiring, training, supervising, and evaluating personnel are relational and not transactional aspects of this work, and have experience navigating the balancing act.
  • Are a collaborative communicator! Practiced in culturally responsive interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Are proactive, self-motivated, and able to work independently and interdependently.
  • Enjoy working with diverse teams and communities. 
  • Get down with critical, strategic thinking and the capacity to manage a variety of projects, priorities, and deadlines.
  • Actively engage in restorative practices and conflict transformation, giving and receiving constructive feedback.
  • Believe in the value of the arts as an expression and foundation to the work at CSC.

The work of the ED includes the following tasks and responsibilities…

ADMINISTRATION AND OPERATIONS (Approximately 35%)

  • Collaborative stewardship of the organizational mission, vision, and values.
  • Collaborate with the executive committee, staff, and board of directors to develop and implement an annual and long term strategic plan. 
  • Build organizational administrative capacity and provide leadership for support staff for efficient and effective management and evaluation. 
  • Provide leadership with space and facilities needs, rent, maintenance, relationships, etc.
  • Support thriving programs in partnership with Co-Directors of Arts and Education as we grow up and glow up.

HUMAN RESOURCES (Approximately 20%)

  • Navigate, improve and manage all organizational HR needs, including operationalizing the CSC Restorative System through collaboration with the staff and board of directors.
  • Attend regular staff, board, and team meetings and guide our growth as individuals and a collective. 

BOARD DEVELOPMENT & RELATIONS (Approximately 20%)

  • Provide leadership for the board of directors, including engagement, development, and fiduciary responsibilities.
  • Nurture relationships with the board of directors and recruit new board members, especially to fill current gaps.
  • Plan and budget for annual board and staff retreat as an opportunity for community and culture building as well as strategic planning and other administrative / operational needs. 

FISCAL MANAGEMENT (Approximately 15%)

  • Collaborate with the executive committee and administrative team to develop, review, refine, and implement annual operating budget in alignment with program budgets and needs.
  • Build a lasting relationship with the CSC accountant to manage all organizational bookkeeping and finances as required by law and in alignment with CSC mission, vision, and values. 

COMMUNICATIONS AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT (Approximately 10% – as well as inherent overlap with other focus areas)

  • Nurture new and existing partnerships with cultural, artistic and social justice organizations locally, regionally, nationally and internationally.
  • Process information requests from current and prospective donors, sponsors, foundations, and board members.
  • Nurture a culture of integrity with internal and external relationships, developing and maintaining open lines of communication.

The ED is a member of CSC’s collaborative leadership team, the Executive Committee consisting of two Co-Directors of Arts and Education and the Board of Directors. The ED’s priorities are maintaining a sustainable organization with a focus on administrative, board, and financial capacity building. The ED will galvanize our internal and external commitment to equity, excellence, and wellness.

Start Date: Preferred start date February 8th (Participation in CSC Workshop is Required)

Compensation:  $60,000-$80,000 annually (depending on experience) plus benefits*

Winter Facilitator Workshop-January 2021

The Creative Strategies for Change Facilitator Workshop is taking place January 29th-February 6th, 2021!

Join us for this immersive workshop building relationships and community rooted in racial equity. Engage with incredible tools for understanding and navigating one’s life experience, and build skills to successfully communicate with others around challenging topics. This interactive and impactful experience will grow participants’ knowledge of self, identity, power, oppression, liberation, and the many factors that make up the context in which we live… and why that all matters. Folks walk away with new creative facilitation techniques, a fresh understanding of oneself within the larger world, knowledge of social justice and restorative practices, new language to use around tough topics, and the confidence to make a unique mark on the world! Our Facilitator Workshops occur quarterly and are registration-based.

“Community Cypher”is energy packed celebration of intentional art and connection! This is a call for people of any age to join in a space of solidarity and exchange. Part open mic, part party, part workshop all focused on enjoying safe creative space together. Come dance, vent, sing, share poems, and get involved in the community conversation. CSC Presents: Arts for Change and Transformation

ACT is a series of workshops connecting the community to social justice themes. Participants will engage in workshops, open mics, and audio composition/recordings. This program is not only designed to connect the community to social justice but, to keep the youth connected to each other during these uncertain times.

This two-week virtual program takes place from August 10th-August 21st for two hours a day, Monday through Friday.

CSC IS HIRING A YOUTH CO-FACILITATOR

CSC Youth Co-Facilitator Artist Position

Part Time | Independent Contractor | Ages 18-24 |

Contract Dates: August 10-21, 2:00PM-4:00PM MST 

Compensation: $30-40/hr. (based on training and experience)

CSC is seeking a young leader to support workshops for our ACT Youth Institute. We are looking for a Youth Co-Facilitator who is committed to providing artistic and educational excellence in alignment with the CSC mission, vision, and values. CSC also has occasional opportunities to participate in performances and workshops outside of regularly scheduled enrichment programs. 

At CSC, we teach practical frameworks of Social Justice through Arts Engagement and Restorative practices. As a facilitating artist, you will be given the tools to teach an understanding of systems of oppression, social identities, community engagement and more to all school levels. As a facilitating artist, you will have a tremendously positive effect on your community.  

Responsibilities: 

The Youth Facilitating Artist will be responsible for supporting planning and teaching the ACT Youth Institute, running over the course of 2 weeks utilizing the CSC Curriculum and Model – integrating social justice frameworks and restorative practices, with arts education. Workshops follow a specific structure and allow room for creative liberty, while working with students to develop a culminating presentation or performance. Facilitating Artists are responsible for administering post student assessments, as well as completing weekly planning documents. Facilitating artists are required to complete the orientation and training 

Skills and Qualifications:

·   Commitment to the CSC mission, vision, and values.

·   Commitment to the CSC Organizational Agreements and Restorative System in principle and practice.

·   Interest in and/or experience as a teaching artist in the specified art form, with clear understanding of youth arts education, development, and engagement.

·   Proactive, self-motivated, positive attitude, able to work independently and interdependently with the diverse CSC Team, students, and community.

·   Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

·   A passion to learn social, racial, and restorative justice.

·   Critical, strategic thinking and the capacity to manage multiple priorities.

·   Flexibility to adjust and creatively navigate unforeseen challenges.

·   Working knowledge of Google Drive and Surveymonkey preferred.

·   CSC team members are required to participate in the facilitator training once each year.
