At Creative Strategies for Change, we work to integrate arts engagement, social justice frameworks, and restorative practices into all of our programs and community events. We believe that place matters, identity matters, oppression exists, and there is real power in community activation. Our services are crafted with the belief that healing and liberation are a collective pursuit in which all of us are bound together.
Read on for an overview of our programs.
School ACT (Arts for Change and Transformation) Youth Institute is an arts driven program empowering youth to respond to the social justice and mental health crisis being faced in society through creative and artistic outlets. Designed for students ages 13-18, ACT’s curricula uniquely combines the arts, social justice, and social-emotional learning, encouraging teens to deeply understand themselves, their art, and their voices in relation to the communities they are part of.
During the program, our youth participants receive seeds for understanding how personal, social, and cultural identities intersect; they practice positive coping strategies to increase mindfulness; they exercise non-violent communication and conflict resolution skills; they consider the relationship between mental health, oppression, and institutions; and they learn how to process their experiences through art. The program culminates in a creative presentation of individual and collaborative artistic expression where family and friends are invited to join.
The ACT Leadership Cohort (ALC) is a four month program for youth ages 13-18. The program provides tools and an avenue for teens to grow into leadership, build diverse and healthy relationships, deepen their understanding of restorative justice, and discover outlets for creative self-expression. Our team thoughtfully prepares experiences that foster confidence, social and emotional wellness, and culturally conscious practices for the cohort to learn and take with them into their homes, schools, and communities. Our teens work with professional artists to explore creative visual art, movement, and wellness modalities, culminating in a group art project and showcase for the community.
This community event for all ages is held monthly every third Thursday. It’s an energy packed celebration of art, connection, and expression through Open Mic. We welcome poets, musicians, comedians, and all genres of spoken word to participate in this offering with attention to maintaining a safe, inclusive environment for sharing and receiving. Each month also features a seasoned or up-and-coming local poet making waves in the community, who shares a set at the end of the night. Come share, vent, sing, listen, and get involved in the conversation.
This program occurs monthly every fourth Monday. It’s a one hour wellness workshop where participants are invited to explore tools for supporting mental health and overall well-being. Each event is facilitated by an expert in the wellness modality they share. Examples of wellness modalities our workshops have included are yoga and movement, plant medicine, guided journaling, meditation, and vocalization. This program is a culturally responsive, healing centered space intended for anyone who wants to engage with others in a wellness practice. We’d love to see you there!
Our Facilitator Workshop is an immersive group experience designed for educators, artists, community leaders, and any individual who wants to develop skills for practicing equity and liberation in their workplace, classroom, or community. In this workshop CSC staff leads the cohort into an exploration of social justice frameworks, arts engagement, and restorative practices so that folks can integrate this knowledge into their lives. Over the course of the workshop, participants gain a command of creative facilitation techniques, a deepened understanding of identity and impact, language for navigating tough conversations, knowledge about the power of arts engagement, and confidence to make an impact from their unique seat in the world. The workshop is held bi-annually and led by expert facilitators whose life work is dedicated to equity and liberation.
CSC offers a variety of models for supporting professional development that centers the journey toward restorative and transformative justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion. Our professional development offerings are individually tailored to each organization based on culture, size, industry, and goals. We offer focused training and education as well as ongoing support for partners and participants. Our model is aligned with nationally recognized standards and equips organizations to build a shared language of equity, explore vision and goals for culture, integrate somatic and restorative practices into the workplace, and engage effectively in inclusive dialogue. We employ an intersectional, anti-oppression, and racial equity framework to address the significance of place, identity, and power so that individuals and organizations can develop greater understanding of their impact and potential.
